Where are the Republican Scientists?

Kevin Drum has some interesting thoughts on a new study showing a dearth of Republicans in the sciences.

I'd be interested in knowing whether or not a Canadian version of that study would yield similar results regarding Conservatives here. If this is any indication of the average Canadian Conservative grasp on science, there very well might be.

Like Kevin Drum I'd like to see the demographics of the 6% of American scientists who are Republican. I'd bet you would find them pooled in a limited number of fields - chemistry instead of biology, engineering instead of earth sciences. I'd also bet a Republican scientist's career advancement path lies in management rather than advanced research.

Isn't the term *Republican scientist* an oxymoron, just like *rational creationist* ...?

My guess is that Republicans would be found in applied sciences like Engineering, most likely Mechanical since they build weapons, or Electrical/Computer since they build the guidance systems for the weapons, while the Civil Engineers mostly build the targets. (Targets like Bridges, Dams, Buildings and Sanitation Systems)

LOL, you link back to Pharngnula and the Old Pratrick Ross defending that Gary Goodyear's shoe cause us to evolve.

Speaking of that fuckwitt, has he taken down the stuff about Canadian Cynic yet?

@MOS & Naked Ape: Both sound like reasonable predictions to me. It'd be interesting to see if statistics bore them out!

@Zorpheous: Wow! Haven't seen you around in a while! How have you been keeping?

Not to sure if the court-mandated "scrubbing" has occurred yet. I checked a few days ago and it didn't appear that anything had been changed, although Ross has started adding new posts after taking a short break around the time that news of the verdict came out. Regardless, if the deadline for him to have cleaned his site hasn't passed yet, it should within the next few days. Guess I'll have to watch Dawg's place for updates!
