Republican/Teabagger congressmen start new session in style: Propose rapist protection legislation.

Balloon Juice has been following what the new right-wing extremists have been doing with the electoral gains they made in the recent election, and it's as bad as anyone might have predicted.

Money quote from Mother Jones:
"Republicans propose that the rape exemption be limited to “forcible rape.” This would rule out federal assistance for abortions in many rape cases, including instances of statutory rape, many of which are non-forcible. For example: If a 13-year-old girl is impregnated by a 24-year-old adult, she would no longer qualify to have Medicaid pay for an abortion. [snip]

Other types of rapes that would no longer be covered by the exemption include rapes in which the woman was drugged or given excessive amounts of alcohol, rapes of women with limited mental capacity, and many date rapes."

Holding middle-class tax cuts and a fragile economic recovery hostage for needless tax-cuts for a ridiculously small percentile of the richest earners, and now this? Is the American electorate politically aware and involved enough to react with reasonable horror, or will apathy, ignorance, and a nostalgic zeal for guns, god and tri-corner hats continue to hamstring what should be world-leadership?
